Maricamp Animal Hospital is trained and equipped to handle surgical procedures that your four-legged friends might need. One of these procedures we specialize in is Perineal Urethrostomy (commonly known as PU).

A Perineal Urethrostomy is a surgery performed on male cats who have a urinary blockage. Urinary obstruction may be caused by small stones, crystals, mucus, or severe inflammation. If blockage cannot be relieved, or if the cat has repeat episodes of urinary obstruction, then we perform Perineal Urethrostomy to alleviate the problem.

Our trained veterinarian surgeons are experienced in PU, making complications rare and having PU be a literal lifesaver.

Mr. Foxy

One of our favorite success stories is Mr. Foxy. He had a diagnosis of stones and grip in his urethra and was referred to us for additional treatment and possible surgery. Dr. Otero was able to successfully unblock Mr.Foxy using a urinary catheter. Due to the progressed state of Foxy’s blockage and the possibility of blocking again in the future, the doctors at MAH determined the best course of action would be to perform Perineal Urethrostomy. Dr. O’Brien was able to successfully perform the PU and Mr.Foxy made a full recovery. Now Mr.Foxy is able to pee with no problem and is happy and healthy at home with his loving family!

Signs and Symptoms

Signs and symptoms can vary from mild to severe. Initially, cats may show signs of urinary tract inflammation and discomfort, including straining to urinate, frequent urination, blood in the urine, painful urination, and inappropriate urination (urination outside of a little box).

If your cat is having any of these signs, please stop by Marion Animal Hospital and our friendly staff will help you through the process and diagnosis to see what is at the root of the issue.
